Heelwork To Music
This discipline has been made famous by the brilliant Mary Ray and her wonderful collies. Caroline and Orca have been learning some of the requirements for this sport. Anyone thinking its simple, needs to think again, its given us a great insight in to the work involved to be really good. But what ever level you aspire to, be it 10 minutes in your garden or the Crufts finals, it should be FUN for both you and your dog! We started about a year ago with a friend Annette, a clicker, touch stick and lots of cocktail sausages, cut small…. Orca has achieved a good repertoire of moves including spins, twists, round, weaves, tick & tock and bows, his favourites. He also jumps in & out and on & off a box not bad for a show dog! In March 2008 we decided to go to Findon Dog Club and compete in a fun class, Special Beginners. We kept it simple and Orca gave a good account of himself and was mobbed as we came out the ring!

Caroline & Orca after competing in HTM Special Beginners @ Findon – March 2008
We then went to West Glen in April and competed in a Starters Freestyle class but it proved a step too far for Orca at this stage. At both events we met some lovely people who were all very supportive and encouraging. We have attended some great HTM Workshops with Sue Hough and learnt an aweful lot even if Orca chose not always to participate!! A big Thank you goes to Annette Leslie and Dennis (Moonrae Shot In The Dark) 9 yrs young who has an enormous following at the HTM events and is a huge favourite in the Crufts HTM display ring. Dennis competes at his leisure to Annette’s consternation, but I believe this may be a trait amongst black poms!!! But they definitely achieve a great Ahh factor where ever they go. Orca and I will not be competing at a serious level, somethings are for FUN!!
Agility Barney & I have been learning to do agility – watch this space – we have been training for about a year and we are coming along quite well if Caroline would get her left’s & rights right!!  And Barney wouldn’t throw himself off some for the equipment which does nothing for the nerves or hearts watching!
